100 valium a day claim dismissed

Submitted by admin on Monday, 24 November 2008

A man who claimed he could take up to 100 valium pills a day has been found guilty of possessing over 1,700 of the tablets with intent to supply.
A police witness told Peebles Sheriff Court that health experts described claims anyone could take more than 30 of the pills in a day as “laughable”.
Colin Boyle, 42, of Peebles, admitted possessing other drugs but denied bags containing 1,726 valium pills were his.
He was found guilty of the offence and sentence was deferred for reports.
Boyle told the court he regularly took a cocktail of heroin and 20 or 30 valium a day.
He added that he could take as many as 100 of the valium pills on some days.
However, Det Con James Gray – an authority on illegal drugs with Lothian and Borders Police – said that if he was to take 30 over 24 hours it would probably kill him.
“This is a huge amount of tablets,” he said.
“I had one case where a user claimed to use 30 valium a day and I was told by health experts that it was a laughable claim.”
‘Quite incredible’
Boyle admitted possessing 74 valium pills, £32 worth of heroin and £7 worth of cannabis at his home on 7 September last year.
He denied possessing two bags containing 1,726 valium tablets with intent to supply and being concerned in the supply of the drug, but was found guilty by Sheriff John Horsburgh after a trial.
Sheriff Horsburgh said: “The accused’s explanation is quite incredible.”
Sentencing was deferred for two weeks for medical reports and Boyle was remanded in custody
