Deadly drugs taken from surgery
A veterinary expert has issued a warning after a potentially lethal drug was stolen from a vet’s surgery.
Burglars broke into Riverside Veterinary Surgery, Brecon Road, Abergavenny, on Friday 2 January.
A quantity of Euthatal, blue in colour and used to destroy animals, was removed, along with dangerous sedatives Sedatov and Atipamezole.
Ifan Lloyd of the British Veterinary Association confirmed that a high dose of Euthatal could be deadly in humans.
Mr Lloyd, a vet with 20 years’ experience, said drugs such as those stolen are registered by veterinary practices on purchase, and kept under lock and key at all times.
He said: “We should be very concerned about their theft for a number of reasons.
“The Euthatal is used for putting animals to sleep and is particularly toxic.
“It could be extremely dangerous to humans if taken internally either by mouth or by injection and if anybody comes across these bottles they should immediately report them to the police.”
