Drugs gang pair given jail terms

Submitted by admin on Friday, 30 November 2007

Two men who were convicted for their part in a multi-million pound drugs ring have been jailed.

Simon Harrison, 37, of Gloucester, was given an eight-year sentence. Siraz Bobat, 39, from Leicestershire, received six years.

Gloucester Crown Court heard the pair were part of a gang which supplied Yorkshire and the Midlands with drugs valued at £10m.

Two other men, from Sheffield and Doncaster, were jailed last week.

Shoukat Ali Yaqoob, from Sheffield, was given an 11-year sentence and Christopher Dewey, from Doncaster, was jailed for five years.

The operation was discovered in May after one of the gang was arrested in the Tredworth area of Gloucester.

“The citizens of this country and the people of Gloucester abhor drug dealers and detest those who sell heroin,” said Judge Jamie Tabor.

“Drugs being sold in this town bring with it crimewaves. It destroys lives and you knew this,” he added.

Yaqoob was said to be the mastermind of the ring.

Jailing Harrison on Tuesday, Judge Jamie Tabor described him as “the principal man for the Gloucester part of the racket.”

“You were the main contact in Gloucestershire and I sentence you only on the basis that you were going to distribute half a kilo of pure heroin,” he said.

Bobat was told he was a vital part of a “well oiled operation”.

The judge praised the work of Gloucestershire Police, saying an investigation of this magnitude came to trial very quickly and should not go un-noticed.

Detective Inspector Neil Carpenter, of Gloucestershire Police’s Major Crime Unit, said the convictions were a major success for the force.

“Harrison was the subject of Operation Mendip in May as we suspected he was a key player in the Gloucester drugs scene,” he said.

“Our action led to him being caught about to hand over £13,000 to a drugs courier and intercepted the supply of a kilo of heroin destined for the streets.

“This operation and subsequent action has succeeded in dismantling a major illegal drugs organisation involving Yorkshire, Leicestershire and Gloucestershire.”
