Merseyside Pc convicted over drugs charge

Submitted by admin on Monday, 25 January 2010

A Merseyside police officer has been found guilty of plotting to supply drugs seized in a police raid.

Clive French, 33, of Lexton Drive, Southport, was convicted at Liverpool Crown Court of conspiracy to supply cannabis.

John Brennan, 46, of Orrell Lane, Walton, was also found guilty of the same offence.

Pc Colin White, 44, of Farndale Road, Liverpool, was found not guilty of the charge.

‘Serious drug offences’

French and Brennan were remanded on bail and are to be sentenced, along with two other police officers – Pc Andrew Bird and Sgt Darren Burns – who also admitted their involvement, on 16 February.

The men were arrested in May 2009.

Temporary Deputy Chief Constable Patricia Gallan, of Merseyside Police, said: “Following a detailed investigation by Merseyside Police’s anti corruption unit three police officers and a member of the public have been convicted of serious drug offences today.

“A fourth police officer has been found not guilty, but he remains suspended from duty whilst consideration is given to any potential misconduct proceedings.

“It is essential that police officers and staff act with integrity at all times.

“We, as a police force, take swift and robust action if any of our officers or staff are found to have broken the law. We take our professional standards very seriously and will not tolerate any behaviour that does not meet our high standards and expectations.”
