Police drug test bar revellers
Police in Berkshire carried out a drug testing operation on more than 400 bar goers as a condition of entry.
Thames Valley Police ran the checks on 445 people who entered the Walkabout bar, off Friar Street in Reading, on Friday night.
Seven people tested positive for cocaine and a 24-year-old man from Caversham was arrested and bailed for possession of class A drugs.
A spokesman for the Walkabout bar welcomed the police operation.
People had their hands swabbed and a drug itemiser was used to tell police within four seconds whether that person may have come into contact with illegal drugs.
‘Hard line’
Some people were searched and refused entry to the bar because of high readings for drug contact.
Surfaces within the bar were also tested but showed only minor traces.
Insp Keith Stacey, of Thames Valley Police, said: “This operation was supported by the venue and was well received by the customers.
“If you get involved in violence or drug activity we will take a very hard line.”
A spokesman for the Walkabout in Reading said: “We have done this a couple of times and we believe we are the cleanest bar in town.”
